Tennis is Cool for School

Updated: Nov 15, 2018

Partner schools and student athletes return to Sportime Randall's Island

Every year, students from schools in East Harlem and the South Bronx participate in free, weekly tennis lessons at Sportime Randall’s Island. These instructional sessions, which usually include between 60-90 students per day, are held throughout the 30+ week academic year. Sportime’s staff of world-class tennis pros work with students to expose them to the sport, develop their skills, and encourage a lifelong love for the game.

Shout out and thanks to our 2018/2019 partner schools: P.S. 112, M.S. 224 Manhattan East II, Central Park East II, Our Lady Queen of Angels, P.S. 88, P.S. 35, M.S. 22, Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School, Bronx Studio School for Writers and Artists, and the Bronx Writing Academy.

Also, this past summer, we were very proud to celebrate the “Moving Up” of our 2017/2018 academic year student-athletes.

Moving Up ceremonies are an important component of Sportime’s annual programming with partner schools as they allow us to recognize the efforts of the hundreds of students and their teachers who come to Sportime each week over 30+ weeks and bring our school-based programming to life.

Each year during the week-long series of Moving Up ceremonies, students receive equipment and materials to support their continuing tennis participation and development, including their own tennis racket, tennis balls, a glossary of tennis terms, a list of New York City Parks’ tennis courts, and information on upcoming tennis opportunities such as Sportime/John McEnroe Tennis Academy open tryouts, and more.

We wish to extend our warm thanks and gratitude to our class of 2017/2018 partner schools, and the hundreds of students who “Moved Up” with us in May!
